It is with great sadness that I have to report that I succumbed to the monster and paid my bill. When I gave it some more thought, there really was no alternative. I did do something though. I paid the total amount due minus one cent. I left that one penny out there just to see if they will put it as a past due balance and call me about it. That way I can get some of my money back. I’m sure that they are stupid enough to where they will call and ask if I want to take care of my past due amount. Then I can have the satisfaction of knowing that for that one cent they are paying someone a salary to call me, paying for the phone call, going through more paperwork, and more hassle. I plan to argue with whoever calls about the one cent, claiming that I don’t have a past due balance. I will drag this out until I can truly hear the frustration in that person’s voice, then tell them that I want to speak to their supervisor, thus extending the cycle of waste. When I get the supervisor on the phone, I will then admit to paying one cent short and point out how the company has just spent probably over a hundred times that much to collect it. I will wait for a response, and about halfway through whatever it is they have to say, I will just hang up the phone.
